Tenormin (atenolol) is a beta blocker used to treat hypertension and angina, as well as to prevent a heart attack. It works by affecting the blood flow through the arteries and veins. This medicine needs to be taken regularly and it’s not recommended to stop the treatment suddenly as withdrawal symptoms can be very unpleasant. Tenormin has been reported to impair the reaction and alertness of some patients taking it. Unless you are sure about the effects this medicine has on you, do not get engaged in hazardous activities that may result in injuries. Before you start taking this medicine your doctor needs to know if you have or used to have any of the following health conditions: depression, a thyroid disorder, a heart problem (congestive heart failure, heart block etc), asthma, diabetes, low blood pressure, liver or kidney disease.

This medicine is pregnancy category D – it can harm an unborn baby if taken by a pregnant woman. Tenormin has also been reported to pass into breast milk and affect the health or a nursing baby. Make sure you tell your doctor about your pregnancy of breastfeeding before staring the treatment. Tenormin side effects can include anxiety, tiredness, nervousness, sleep problems, decreased sex drive and impotence.
